The Family Heirloom

Hello readers, here I present to you a thrilling story about a guy entering a house where he is trying to find something and finds something else, something more interesting and dangerous. Don't forget to comment below and if you like it then follow.

The Family Heirloom

My heart hammered against my ribs as I extended my arm to reach the rusty door handle. I pushed the door which opened with opened with a loud creak and a bang against the wall supporting its hinges. A putrid and unwelcome stench hit my nose as I put my foot on the disintegrating and creaky wooden floor board.

The house it seemed had been taken over by arachnids. The corners were riddled with silky strands of spider silk and the furniture had darkened over time.

The room glowed orange as the scanty light of the setting sun entered through the grimy window. I took another step into the abandoned house and noticed a door to the right of me. It had a thick layer of dust on it and a spider was crawling over its shiny metal surface. I knew I had nothing to do with anything beyond that door but I still tried going past the door.

I reached for the handle and pulled but the hinges were badly rusted and the door did not budge. I tried again and pulled with all my might but the door still did not open. I quit and moved further inside the house and with each step I took the putrid stench like that of a rotting corpse became stronger.

After a few more steps into the house I found another door. Its finely finished mahogany handle was now shining in the orange light of the sun; I closed my fist around the handle, my heart beating faster than ever, and opened the door.

I could never have been ready to face what I saw next. The door opened to a big circular chamber with a high ceiling and lit by many well placed candelabras. The hall itself would have beautiful if there had not been hundreds of skeletons hanging from long ropes attached to the ceiling.

Some of the skeletons still had chunks of rotting flesh on some parts. That explained the putrid smell. I pulled my t-shirt over my nose in an attempt to block out the smell but it did no good. I proceeded into the room, stooping so that the toes of the unknown people did not brush my hair.

I wandered in the hall without any particular destination in mind until my eyes caught sight of the thing that I had come here for; the locket. It was a locket made of gold and studded with diamonds, rubies and many other precious stones. The locket was a family heirloom that was stolen from our family many generations ago.

I walked to the locket and snatched it from the box that contained I, but as soon as I did it, all the dead skeletons became alive and started thrashing in the air trying to get free of the ropes that bound them.

A new door had also opened behind the box now devoid of the locket. I realised that it would not be much longer before they broke free of their bounds. I quickly went through the door in order to get away from the living dead in pursuit of me.
The door opened into a narrow corridor which, surprisingly, did not lead me to my doom but instead got me out of the house.

The only possible explanation that I had found for this is that the ancient locket contained some strong ancestory power and it recognised me as a descendent of the family that owned me and made a way for me out of the doomed house.
