The Problem with YouTube
In 2005 three former PayPal Employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Javed Karim developed a video sharing website. Little did they know that this would become the most popular of its kind.
This website, today known as YouTube has become a problem. Millions of people waste countless number of hours daily in the name of 'entertainment'.
Daily 5 Million videos are watched and assuming that the length of each video is about 12 minutes then daily 1 million hours of videos are watched. Considering that 30 percent of the videos are watched for constructive causes and 10 percent is valid entertainment, then daily 600 thousand of hours are wasted on YouTube. Looking at the average hourly income of American's that is around $30 then daily 18 Million dollars are WASTED!
That maths certainly isn't pleasing. YouTube fans would argue that YouTube also generates a lot of income. I would like to tell them that 45 percent of what the advertisers pay is taken by Google. Google does not reveal YouTube Revenue or Profit do it is hard to determine the exact amount that YouTube pays but it certainly cannot be higher than 18 million dollars a day.
Note that 18 Million dollars is the money lost because of watching wasteful videos not all videos.
Many YouTube users complain of this. YouTube is just very wasteful. Its not that it is a bad thing to watch videos on YouTube but anything in excess is poison. Watching YouTube an hour a day for entertainment is fine but some people just cross the limits by literally being on YouTube 24/7.
YouTube is a weapon, it's not in the users hands to limit YouTube usage, they feel helpless once they have opened it, this is because humans are made to be curious so no matter what a person intent on watching only 1 video, ends up watching 10, and this is how 18 million dollars are wasted daily.
That is it for this post, will talk about how to overcome this problem in the next post.
